Dr. Antonio Da Silva High School and Junior College of Commerce
The school was founded in 1868 by Rev. John Braz Fernandes,( Vicar of the Church of Our Lady of Salvation,Dadar) and was then known as St.John’s School. In 1875, Dr. Antonio da Silva of Dadar through the good offices of Rev. John.B.Fernandes, left by his will the bulk of his estate for the foundation of a high school. The school then came to be known by its present name. In June 1963, the Technical stream was shifted to a new building at Veer Savarkar Marg, Dadar. In 1978,the Junior College of Commerce was started.
Over the past 148 years the school has been responsible for the education of its pupils from diverse socio-economic strata and religious backgrounds. Boys of all communities have always been admitted, though preference is still given to Catholics. The school aims at the integral personal formation of the pupils. To this end, special efforts are made :
- To help the pupils become mature, spiritually oriented men of character;
- To encourage them to strive after excellence;
- To make them unselfish in the service of their fellowmen;
- To make them agents of progressive social change;
- To make them clear and firm on principles, courageous and resolute in action.
- To instil in them a true national spirit, a deep love for their motherland, an appreciation of Indian culture, values, languages and traditions;
Education is not merely the development of the mind and the body, but also the heart, so that pupils are more alive to and aware of situations in which people live, specially the poor and the oppressed. In the formation of character, emphasis is laid on qualities of commitment, initiative, team spirit, integrity, honesty, simplicity, austerity and service to others.
Dear students, teachers, parents and well wishers,
Greetings, from me and my team here at Dr Antonio da Silva High School and Junior College of Commerce.
It is indeed a pleasure to have our very own website independent yet securely woven into the fabric of the Antonian family. A long awaited dream come true.
Dr Antonio da Silva High School & Jr College’, is one of the oldest educational Institution in this maximum city, Mumbai and our School education has enriched several minds, broadened horizons and given pupils an ever lasting hunger for exploring new ideas and vistas of opportunity.
For a school whose history goes back to over a hundred years it has been a long & satisfying journey, with humble beginnings as an English school for Portuguese children, it has steadily grown & flourished during the British rule and now in independent India In this long period the definition and purpose of education itself has been defined and redefined.
Today educational activities and learning processes are no longer confined to classroom-based curriculum. New methods and teaching aids equip the younger generations to learn more, explore more and contribute more to the society. Our institution has always welcomed technology that could better the teaching learning process. The smart boards in every classroom, the newly established e-library and IT subject for the junior college with an all new IT lab bears witness to our commitment to bettering the education process. For we believe that Education is the true alchemy that can bring India to its next golden age.
In a nation whose demography is young , both in age and spirit, educators have the responsibility of providing education which is rich in values and modern in content. Having experience as a teacher myself, I have always drawn inspiration from the words of Swami Vivekananda “Education is the process by which character is formed, strength of mind is increased, and intellect is sharpened, as a result of which one can stand on one’s own feet, and a teacher’s sacred duty is to invoke the spirit of inquiry in his pupils.” Professional development helps our teachers stay abreast with the latest trends in education.
Dr ADHS has also made significant contribution to the world of sports. Our eminent sports alumni like Farookh Engineer, Rusli Surti (cricket), Olympians Clarence & Gilbert Lobo (hockey) and many others make our hearts swell with pride. To continue our past glory & encourage many more youngsters to follow suit we have envisioned and started the Dr Antonio da Silva Sports Academy providing our students ‘state of the art’ sports facility & trained coaches. for a wide array of games (Football and hockey, tennis , basketball, cricket, kabaddi, martial arts & indoor games like carom, chess, table tennis). This not only aims at producing sport stars but also ensures that our students imbibe healthy playing habits & sportsmanship.
Co curricular activities like dance, music, drama, debates, elocution, extempore, art & craft competitions, are organised and conducted each year and workshops organised inorder to bring out the best in our pupils. For in the words of our beloved late president Dr A.P.J Abdul Kalam “All of us do not have equal talent. But , all of us have an equal opportunity to develop our talents.”
Dr ADHS has stood the test of time & as we prepare to herald in the completion of 150 years of our institution., we pray the Almighty may continue to bless us and every one of you.
